Growth Updates 0-8 Weeks

Pregnancy

Herra’s pregnancy progressed beautifully, and she fully embraces the extra pampering and nourishment along the way. Italian Stallion × Herra remains one of our most proven pairings, and we are proud to welcome their newborn puppies.

Delivery Day

Herra has safely delivered her puppies!

Herra carried very large throughout her pregnancy and maintained a noticeably elevated appetite, which often suggests a bigger litter. Labor was steady and extended, with about an hour and a half between each puppy’s arrival. To our surprise, she delivered one male and two females.

While this litter is smaller than anticipated, each puppy is chunky, strong, and nursing beautifully. Herra has always loved being a mother. Even with past offspring, she eagerly continued caring for them well beyond the usual weaning stage. True to form, she is fully in her mommy mode now, keeping her babies close, warm, and content, and she looks completely at peace.

Congratulations to our DKV families who reserved from this pairing. We are grateful to finalize this phenomenal and proven combination with three beautiful, healthy puppies.

Week 1 Update

Week 1 Update
Italian Stallion x Herra

The first week of life is intentionally quiet and uneventful, which is exactly how it should be.

Herra continues to demonstrate why she is considered one of the most reliable and attentive mothers in the DKV program. She keeps the puppies close to her at all times, carefully maintaining warmth and making sure each puppy nurses regularly. Her calm and attentive maternal behavior ensures the litter remains comfortable, secure, and properly cared for throughout the day and night.

With only one male and two females in this litter, each puppy receives frequent nursing opportunities and they are growing quickly. At this stage they already resemble little bear cubs, round and well fed as they continue their early development.

During the first week of life, puppies are still unable to see or hear. Their eyes and ears remain sealed while their neurological systems continue developing. Because of this, nearly their entire day is spent sleeping, often more than twenty two hours each day.

Their routine is very simple. They wake briefly to nurse, Herra stimulates them, and they quickly return to sleep. This cycle repeats continuously as their bodies focus on early growth and development.

While the first week does not bring much visible activity, it is one of the most important stages in the puppies’ development. They are doing exactly what they should be doing right now, staying warm, eating well, and growing steadily.

Beginning with this litter, we will also be sharing regular video updates instead of relying only on photos posted here. Short videos are now being recorded approximately every two days so families can watch the puppies develop in real time.

New video updates in our DKV Litter Journal will be posted on our social platforms on Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. These updates will give families a closer look at the puppies’ growth and help everyone feel more connected to the process as the litter develops.

Week 2 Update

Week 2 Update
Italian Stallion x Herra

The second week of life always brings a few small but exciting changes as the puppies continue their early development.

Herra continues to be an exceptional mother and remains extremely attentive to her three babies. She spends most of her time with them in the whelping box, feeding them regularly and keeping them clean and comfortable. What we enjoy most is how interested she seems when we pick the puppies up. She often watches closely as we admire them, almost as if she enjoys showing off her babies. With only three puppies in the litter, each one receives constant attention and plenty of nursing time, which has resulted in very full, chunky, and content little puppies.

The most exciting milestone this week is that their eyes have begun to open. One morning Angel and I came in to check on the litter and all three puppies were looking back at us with their eyes halfway open. It is always one of the first big moments in a litter’s development and a reminder that they are quickly moving into their next stage of growth. We captured individual videos of each puppy so families can see their new little eyes beginning to open.

Their ears are still mostly sealed at this point, but they are also beginning to crack slightly and will continue opening over the coming days. Hearing will gradually follow as their sensory systems continue developing.

The puppies are also beginning to move around a little more each day. While they are still very young, they have started to waddle around the whelping box with more purpose and coordination than they did during the first week. Watching them learn these small movements and gain confidence week by week is always one of the most enjoyable parts of raising a litter.

Aside from these early milestones, their daily routine remains very simple. They are still sleeping well over twenty-two hours each day, waking briefly to nurse before quickly returning to sleep. Even though they are awake for only short periods of time, their bodies are doing an incredible amount of development during this stage.

We will continue documenting the litter through the DKV Litter Journal, where short video updates are posted approximately every two days. These videos allow families to follow along as the puppies grow and reach new milestones each week.

Week 3 Update

Week 3 Update
Italian Stallion x Herra

The puppies are now three weeks old and continuing to develop beautifully.

Their eyes and ears are both open now, and they are becoming much more aware of what’s going on around them. They are starting to move around the whelping box more each day, even though they’re still a little wobbly on their feet. It’s always fun to watch this stage as they begin interacting more with each other and exploring their little world.

This litter continues to impress us with their size and overall beauty. They are strong, healthy puppies and developing exactly the way we like to see at this stage.

Herra continues to be an incredible mother. She is attentive, patient, and very devoted to the litter, which always makes a big difference during these early weeks.

We took their three-week photos this week, and while the puppies weren’t exactly thrilled about the photo session, they handled it well. You could definitely tell they were ready to get back into their warm whelping box once we were finished.

Overall, the litter is doing excellent, and we’re looking forward to watching them continue to grow and develop over the coming weeks.

Week 4 Update

Week 4 Update
Italian Stallion × Herra Litter

The puppies are now four weeks old and becoming much more active.

They’re moving around the whelping box with a lot more confidence now, and their coordination continues to improve each day. What used to be wobbly steps has turned into steady movement, and they are starting to explore more of their space and interact more with each other.

This is the stage where their personalities really begin to show. We’re seeing more play, more curiosity, and more awareness of their environment as they continue to develop.

This litter continues to impress us with their size, structure, and overall beauty. They are strong, healthy puppies and progressing exactly the way we like to see.

Herra is still doing an excellent job and continues to be very attentive with them. She’s a natural mother, and it shows in how well the puppies are doing.

We did not post videos last week as I was watching my grandson while his parents were out of the country, but we’re back this week. You’ll see their first interaction with toys on our social media, which is always a fun milestone to watch as they start engaging with new things.

Angel will also be introducing food for the first time this week, which is another big step. We’ll be sharing that as well, so make sure to watch for those videos.

We hope everyone is still following along with our DKV Litter Journal and enjoying the videos each week.

Overall, everything is progressing right on track, and we’re excited to see how they continue to develop over the next few weeks.

Week 5 Update

Week 5 Update
Italian Stallion × Herra Litter

The puppies are now five weeks old and full of energy.

They are playful, active, and constantly interacting with each other. This is the stage where the litter really starts to come alive, and it’s been a lot of fun to watch them grow into their personalities.

They have now been introduced to their puppy milkshake and puppy food, and they absolutely love it. Feeding time has quickly become one of their favorite parts of the day, and they’ve taken to it very naturally.

We’ve also started allowing them to explore outside of the whelping box, and they are very curious about everything. They’re gaining confidence as they move into new spaces and continue to experience more of their environment.

The litter continues to impress — big, fat, and so stinkin adorable. They are developing beautifully and exactly how we like to see at this stage.

Most moms start getting a little tired around this point and are ready for more breaks, but not Herra. She continues to be incredibly attentive and patient with the puppies, which has been really impressive to watch.

Overall, everything is progressing right on track, and we’re excited to see how they continue to develop over the next few weeks.

Week 6 Update
Italian Stallion × Herra Litter

The puppies are now six weeks old and full of personality.

They are very active, playful, and confident at this stage. The litter spends a lot of time interacting with each other — playing, exploring, and testing boundaries as they continue to develop.

Their coordination and movement have come a long way, and they’re navigating their space with ease now. They’re also becoming much more engaged with everything around them, which is always a great sign at this stage.

They are doing excellent with puppy food and continue to grow quickly. This litter has really stood out in terms of size, structure, and overall presence, and that continues to show more each week.

We are continuing to give them more opportunities to be outside of the whelping area, and they are very curious and confident when exploring new spaces and experiences.

Herra is still doing a great job with them. She remains patient and attentive, while naturally starting to give them a little more independence as they grow.

The puppies will be heading to the vet soon for their first vaccine and health documentation. We will begin the puppy selection process next week, and once selections are complete, we will move into finalizing paperwork.

Please be sure to have all owner information submitted, and we will also need to finalize pickup or delivery arrangements as we get closer to go-home time.
